What Is Brahma Kumaris?

A Five-Minute Introduction to the Brahma Kumaris

The Brahma Kumaris is a worldwide spiritual organization with over 8,000 branches across more than 130 countries. The roots of the Brahma Kumaris go back to the 1930s, when Dada Lekhraj, a respected diamond merchant from Hyderabad, Sindh (now in Pakistan), received powerful visions of a future world transformed into a peaceful, divine society. In 1937, guided by these revelations, he established a spiritual community dedicated to exploring and sharing spiritual truths. He later became known as Prajapita Brahma. Through him, it is believed, God—referred to as Shiv Baba—began to convey spiritual wisdom. After the Partition of India in 1947, the organization moved its headquarters to Mount Abu, a serene hill station in Rajasthan, India. Since then, the Brahma Kumaris has been dedicated to spreading the message of peace, self-transformation, and universal brotherhood across the globe.

Is the Brahma Kumaris a Religion?

The Brahma Kumaris is not a religion, but rather an art of living that transcends religious boundaries. The core teachings emphasize:

  • Meditation is essential for a peaceful life.

  • True knowledge is reflected in our attitude and actions.

  • Generosity attracts abundance: “Be good, do good” is our motto.

How Can the Brahma Kumaris Help Me?

The Brahma Kumaris is a selfless society offering principles and guidance for living a values-based life. With the Supreme as our guiding light, many experience success and positivity across all areas of life by applying these teachings.

Why is the Brahma Kumaris Honoured Worldwide?

The Brahma Kumaris is honoured globally for the pure and positive vibrations its followers radiate. These positive energies stem from a direct connection with the Divine through meditation. We believe that “honour is received when we honour others.”

Who Was Brahma Baba?

Dada Lekhraj, born in 1876 in Hyderabad, Sindh, into a devout family, initially pursued a successful career as a diamond merchant. His father was a schoolmaster. Throughout his life, he sought spiritual guidance, studying under many teachers. At around age 60, during a satsang, he experienced profound visions of God and a forthcoming transformation of the world. These revelations led him to first transform himself and then to share this divine wisdom with others. He became the medium through whom God revealed spiritual truths, helping countless souls to adopt a meaningful “art of living.” He left his physical body at the age of 93.

Was Brahma Baba God? Who Is God?

No, Brahma Baba was not God. He served as a spiritual instrument, a medium chosen by God to facilitate world transformation. God—often remembered as Shiv Baba—is the eternal, incorporeal being known as the Ocean of Love, the Supreme Intellect, the Almighty Authority, the Comforter of Hearts, the Truth, the Ever-Living Being, and the Blissful One.

The Brahma Kumaris is not an organization of idol worshippers, but a community of individuals striving to become living ideals, drawing spiritual strength directly from God through meditation.

Does the Brahma Kumaris Respect Other Religions?

Yes, the Brahma Kumaris deeply respects the core principles of all religions and values their teachings. We believe in the equality of all faiths, recognizing God as the universal Father of all souls, and humanity as one global family.

Is the Brahma Kumaris Scientific or Spiritual?

The Brahma Kumaris is a beautiful blend of science and spirituality. We use the tools and innovations of science for a more comfortable life, while nurturing a spiritual mindset that helps maintain inner stability, especially during challenging times.

What is Taught at the Brahma Kumaris?

A foundational 7-day course introduces participants to:

  • Self-awareness and understanding the soul

  • Recognizing the Supreme Being

  • The significance of human existence in the world cycle

  • The law of karma

  • Connecting with the Supreme through Rajyoga Meditation

What is the Knowledge of the Self?

Each of us plays a unique role on this vast world stage. The body is merely a temporary costume; the soul within is eternal and imperishable. Most of our suffering arises from identifying too much with the body and its relationships, forgetting our true spiritual identity.

What is the Philosophy of Karma?

Our actions (karma) determine our experiences. For example, a man blind from birth, despite his good nature, was found—through spiritual regression—to have been an executioner in a previous life, taking pleasure in punishing people by blinding them. The lesson here is clear: we must perform our roles as instruments of justice, not with personal interest or attachment.

How Does Meditation Help?

Meditation is like medicine for the soul. Knowledge of the self is food, and meditation is the fuel that energizes our inner journey. It uplifts our spirit, builds confidence, nurtures positivity, and empowers us to succeed in life.

How Can I Become a Brahma Kumar or Brahma Kumari?

Becoming a Brahma Kumar or Brahma Kumari begins with a mindset. If you live with an attitude of universal brotherhood, maintain generosity, think positively, and stay connected with the Supreme, you are already embodying the essence of a Brahma Kumar or Kumari. While some choose to dedicate their lives fully to this spiritual path, it is not necessary to renounce the world. Living these values in daily life is what truly matters.
